What is an Interjection
An interjection conveys an emotion to the person is a full sentence in itself. For example, when people say ‘wow’, they are using an interjection. Interjections don’t connect sentences, but they convey the reader, what the writer is feeling or what the characters are feeling.
Where are they used?
Interjections are often used at the start of a sentence and after every interjection, comes a punctuation mark, like a comma. When the sentence in which the interjection is used ends, it ends with an exclamation point. For example, “Hurray, we are celebrating my birthday!”; in this sentence, hurray is the interjection, followed by a comma.
Middle & End
An interjection can be used in the middle of sentences and at the end as well. “So, it is raining again, huh?” The ‘huh’ at the end of the sentence is the interjection.
“In my opinion, oh my god, this is the best cake ever!”; the interjection is used in the middle here and is separated by commas.
Interjections are considered stand-alone sentences as well. For example, when someone says, “Oh gosh!”, followed by more information, then that would be considered a standalone sentence.
When Should They Be Used?
Interjection should be used in informal writing. For example, if two people are texting to each other, or instant messaging, then they can use interjections. However, if students want to use interjections in academic writing, then this is not recommended.
